The Saguaro Palm Springs is presenting a six-week mixology contest where local bartenders will compete to create new cocktails using Selvarey rum. The public is invited to taste the bartenders’ rum creations at the competition kick-off on Monday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Saguaro (1800 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs). Admission is free to observe the competition and $5 for cocktail tasting and voting. The competition continues for six weeks until the winner is selected on August 4, with the winning bartender taking home $1,500 in cash, a spread in The Tasting Panel magazine and their winning cocktail will be featured at James Beard Award-winning Iron Chef Joe Garces’ Tinto restaurant at the Saguaro.
If you are not yet familiar with Selvarey rum, this is a great opportunity to try it out. Selvarey was co-founded by brothers Marc and Seth Gold, their brother-in-law Robert Herzig, and friend and singer-songwriter Bruno Mars, with the goal of creating a premium spirit that would change the way people think about and drink rum. Selvarey rum is produced in the jungles of Panama by master distiller Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez, and after launching earlier this year, the rum has already received multiple awards in spirits competitions. We’re already big fans and can’t wait to see what the competing bartenders concoct using Selvarey’s two rums: Selvarey White (a mixture of three- and five-year-old rums distilled in 1922 copper stills, aged in bourbon casks and carbon filtered to remove the color while retaining the deep flavors imparted from the aging process) and Selvaray Cacao (five-year-old rum infused with the finest locally-sourced Panamanian chocolate). If you can’t make it to the mixology events at the Saguaro, you should definitely pick up some Selvarey to try out at home. We’ve included a few of our favorite Selvarey cocktail recipes below for some inspiration, or get creative and try your hand at a some cocktail invention yourself!
