Paper Flower Making  //  July 16, 2016, 9am – noon

Ji Kim of Blooms in the Air will teach her popular Paper Flower Making Workshop at the Saguaro. The workshop will teach students all the basic skills necessary to sculpt paper flowers using high quality European crepe papers. During the workshop, students will create colorful and convincing paper flower bouquets and wearable crowns. You might even stop buying cut flowers once you have the ability to create your own long-lasting arrangements! Each participant will leave with their very own handcrafted paper flower crown and bouquet, as well as all of the skills necessary to make their own paper flower sculptures anytime, anywhere. Since we will be out in the desert, Ji Kim will show us how to sculpt a special desert flower!

Macrame Wall Hanging  //  July 30, 2016, 9am – noon

Are you ready to join the macrame revival? Macrame is a form of textile-making that uses knotting rather than weaving or knitting. While the practice is steeped in history, it has made a comeback in the form of wall art, plant hangers, and more. In this workshop, led by Emily Katz of Modern Macrame, you will learn to create your very own beautiful macrame wall hanging in a style that suits your space. From conception to completion, you’ll learn all the steps needed to craft a macrame wall hanging to take home, and to continue creating pieces on your own.

In addition to the project you create during the 3-hour workshop, you will take home a tote bag, 2 classic macrame knots, and inspiration to spark your future creations.

Loom Weaving  //  August 6, 2016, 9am – noon

Textile artist Janelle Pietrzack of All Roads Studio will guide students in the process of weaving on a wooden frame loom. Unlike most weaving classes, Janelle will incorporate the use of unconventional materials such as rope, wool roving, and raffia to encourage students to focus on texture, much like she does in her own work for All Roads. Students will learn how to wrap a frame loom, a basic plain weave, and how to finish and hang their piece. No pressure to finish the piece during the class, though, as Janelle will provide a full instructional booklet on the basics of weaving, a wooden frame loom, yarn, and needle for students to take home and continue their beautiful works in progress.
