ORANGE AND TURMERIC MARGARITA

The rift between margarita fans who like their drinks frozen or prefer them on the rocks is huge. There is another big question. Salt or no salt? One day a year we put aside our differences and come together for National Margarita Day! I’ve made an Orange and Turmeric Margarita my favorite way, frozen with a salted rim, for the joyous occasion that celebrates one of my favorite drinks.

Orange Turmeric Margarita
serves 1

1 1/2 oz. Tequila
1/2 oz. Cointreau
1 oz. orange juice
1/2 oz. lime juice
3/4 oz. agave turmeric syrup*
salt, turmeric and chili pepper mixture for rim

*Agave turmeric syrup:

2 cups agave
1 cup water
1 tbsp. turmeric powder

To make your syrup add agave, water and turmeric to a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring frequently to incorporate the turmeric. Let cool and strain into a sealable bottle.

Making frozen margaritas is easy because all you do is assemble in a blender, add ice, and push a button. In a few seconds you’ll have a frosty treat. Rim your glasses with a salt, turmeric and chili pepper mixture. I combined a tablespoon of each in a little dish for easy rimming. Finally, pour into your salted glasses. Can we talk about these cactus glasses for a second? They are my absolute favorite and you can shop them here!

Turmeric is a beautiful spice that adds a vibrant orange-yellow hue to drinks and food. It is also aromatic, earthy, bitter and gives off scents of both ginger and orange. Turmeric has long been a powerful healing herb with its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Adding turmeric not only made the hue of this Orange and Turmeric Margarita pretty but it also added savoriness and complimented the other ingredients perfectly.

I’m happy to say that this is my second National Margarita Day that I will be spending in Palm Springs. I left New York a snowy, rainy mess and I’m so happy to be in my favorite place, finally enjoying a margarita poolside. I hope you whip up a few of these Orange and Turmeric Margaritas, ideally in the company of tacos. Let us know how they turn out and if you’re in Palm Springs, don’t forget to check out some Modernism Week events like the Palm Springs Door Tour. Happy National Margarita Day and Happy Modernism Week!
